Given this research, I can definitely say people DO empathize and we can get a sense of how often and for what emotions they are empathizing with. These numbers may change from study to study, so I wouldn't confidently say "expect 9 empathy times this week" or "you'll definitely empathize with positive emotions 3x more than negative ones."
However, we cannot answer if people "should" empathize. 1) "should" anyone do anything? I am not convinced. 2) this research ONLY says when people empathize daily, they are also higher in well-being. This also means, people with high well-being tend to empathize. It does not say empathy CAUSES well-being. In fact, it can be related to low well-being as well when empathy is stressful.
